과외쌤 vs 가정교사 vs 개인교사 [tutoring]

Appreciate my image pls

저는 미국 수화 과외쌤이서 이 단어들 배웠어요

I’m a tutor primarily (I tutor ASL specifically), and while at work I decided to write ASL Tutor on the board in both English and Korean. But I had to learn the Korean word and turns out there’s a lot of options:

Formal Words

과외선생님

This means ‘tutor’! The 선생님 on the end means ‘teacher’, the -님 adding respect to the word.

개인교사

This is literally translated as ‘private/individual teacher’.

개인 = individual

교사 = teacher

가정교사

This one is literally ‘home teacher’.

가정 = home

교사 = teacher

Casual/Informal Words

과외선생

This one actually sounds rude! It’s because in this word the -님 is left off and the -님 indicates respect.

과외쌤

This word is both cute and respectful! It has a friendly nuance to it. 쌤 is an abbreviation/slang of 선생님.

As a Verb

The verb form is 과외하다.
