대리만족 and 먹방 (Korean Vocab)

My friend and I were talking about 먹방 and I have no idea why. But we were discussing how we don’t see the appeal of them and don’t watch them. I’m like ‘I don’t understand, why do people like them so much?’ She said that it’s because it gives them 대리만족.

And I was like ‘Yay! New word!’

If you google 대리 it will give you a different definition, but both my friend and I made a face when we saw it; it isn’t exactly correct. ‘Alternative’ is a better translation.

So 대리만족 translates along the lines of ‘alternative satisfaction’

I’ll elaborate.

So if someone is craving pizza but is on a diet and can’t eat it, or doesn’t have money to order it, or doesn’t want to go get it, or whatever, they can watch a 먹방 of someone eating pizza. For some reason this helps quench their craving for pizza and even though they didn’t eat it, they feel satisfied. This satisfaction is called 대리만족.

대리 (alternative) because watching the 먹방 is an alternative to eating the pizza yourself. And 만족 because watching the 먹방 provides the same satisfaction as eating the pizza.

대리만족
