Engineering Words in Korean

Ok yeah this is random but my friend is a mechanical engineering major so I wanted to know the word for ‘engineer’, and it turns out that figuring out the word for ‘engineer’ is WAY more complicated than expected.

Here’s the basis

Vocab

공학

Engineering

공학자

Engineer

gives the impression of chemical engineering or someone who graduated with a degree in engineering

기술

Technology

기술자

Engineer

A more general term, but they don’t nessecarily have a degree in engineering

전비공

Mechanic

기계

Machine

기계 공학자 / 기계 기술자

Mechanical Engineer

No real difference between them; both are natural. But if they have a degree in mechanical engineering I would use 기계 공학자

디자이너

Designer

like someone who designs machinery. They just Konglish it

3D 프린팅

3D printing/3D printer

Why the heck did I ask about 3D printers?

I was trying to figure out how to explain what an engineer was in case they didn’t actually know what an engineer was so I sent this:

My previously mentioned engineering friend was designing one of these for his final project so that’s why I’m going all fancy with bio printers….it wasn’t to be extra. Its just the example I had 🤷🏼‍♀

I sent the question to like…..3 different people. And my answers varied greatly because they were like:

“음…..3D 프린터 디자이너?”

“um….a 3d printer designer?”

Which is fair, but then I clarified and we got the words for engineer.

Anyway that’s why I’m including 3d printing as a word. The more you know and all that
